Hepatica nobilis var. acuta

Hepatica nobilis var. acuta, known in English as "sharp-lobed hepatica", "sharp-lobed liverleaf", "kidneywort", "liverwort", or "pennywort" and in French as anémone hépatique is a forest perennial native to the northern hemisphere. The flowers may be white, pink, or blue-mauve.

When I was growing up in Ontario, the hepaticas (var. obtusa) were the first flowers to bloom in spring, so I was surprised to see them blooming still in May. I photographed this plant at the Toronto Botanical Garden.
